Some of my favourite sites dealing with the Med:
Fortress Europe: www.fortresseurope.blogspot.com
Because the Mediterranean isn’t just about nice pictures (much as nice photographs are what this site is about). For what is really happening in the Med today you could do worse than have a look at this multi-lingual site.
Babelmed: www.babelmed.net
A fantastic on-line magazine in Arabic, English or French. Its coverage is incredibly wide ranging and is constantly being updated. It’s perfect for current affairs and contemporary culture, with the music section listing unique (as far as I know!) monthly recommendations.
Museum with no Frontiers: www.discoverislamicart.org
An international virtual museum and database of Islamic art, architecture and archaeology of the Mediterranean. Seems to be growing in its coverage daily, and so fast becoming a really valuable resource. Stunning photography as well.
Med Film Festival: www.medfilmfestival.org
Rome’s annual Mediterranean film festival. But regardless of whether you can make it to Rome a scan of the programme is a great way of keeping up-to-date with current pan-European and -Mediterranean film making. My recommendation from past festivals is the Algerian black comedy Délice Paloma; it was, as the programme describes, very Almodovar-esque…
Words Without Borders: www.wordswithoutborders.org
Not strictly Mediterranean, but an on-line magazine for international literature, which publishes extracts from contemporary international writers, often for the first time in English. There are also printed anthologies, including the quirkily-entitled ‘Literature from the Axis of Evil’.
